Energy Efficiency Questions & Answers
How should I prepare for my Quick Home Energy Check-Up?
During the walk-through, your energy professional will need to access your heating and cooling systems and attic. To keep the Q in QHEC, please clear the areas in front and around your boiler, hot water heater, washer/dryers, and attic. Also, if you have a large entertainment system, we advise pulling it away from the wall, so our team member can install a smart power strip for your devices.
Why do all of the energy saving measures need to be installed during the Quick Home Energy Check-Up?
For homeowners to receive the energy-saving measures, all products must replace an existing, in-use device to positively impact your savings. Additionally, our team wants to ensure that all products received are in optimal working condition.
Is there really no cost? If so, who pays for the program?
Yes. The home check-up and energy efficiency installs come to you at no additional cost. Customers of BGE, Pepco, and Delmarva Power pay a small monthly surcharge which funds 100% of the QHEC program. To help offset the cost of the surcharge, it’s recommended to participate in this program.

How should I prepare for my Home Performance with Energy Star audit?
In your Home Performance appointment confirmation email, you will receive a ‘What to Expect’ document and a ‘Pre-Audit Checklist’. Please read through both documents, and return the completed ‘Pre-Audit Checklist’, so our certified energy auditor has a better understanding about your home’s energy usage.
Your energy auditor will need access to every room in your home, including the attic, crawlspace, fireplace and combustion appliance area to create an accurate energy model of your home. Before the audit, it is helpful to clear access to these areas.
I heard I may receive no additional cost energy efficiency products? What does that include?
If you’ve already had a QHEC, you may have already received some products to help save energy. The Home Performance with Energy Star audit includes even more direct install measures. When your certified professional comes to audit your home, s/he will also replace remaining energy inefficient products with up to an additional 14 LED bulbs, 2 shower heads, 1 shower start adapter, 3 low-flow aerators, 1 smart strip and pipe insulation for your hot water heater’s exposed pipes. Note: If you are in Pepco, you may only be eligible for water measures if you have electric or natural gas powered water heaters.
What is the cost of the Home Performance with Energy Star audit? Who helped subsidize the cost?
The Home Performance with Energy Star audit is a $400 value, but is available to qualified BGE and Pepco customers starting at $100 for homes up to 3,000 square feet and single combustion appliance zones. For homes greater than 3,000 square feet or with more than one combustion appliance zone, the cost is $150.
Customers of BGE, Pepco, and Delmarva pay a small monthly surcharge which funds up to 75% of the Home Performance with Energy Star audit. To help offset the cost of the surcharge, it’s recommended to participate in this program.

What are some easy changes I can make to decrease my energy consumption?
- Light Bulbs — Switch out incandescent light bulbs for LED to save an average of 6% energy use and up to $130 annually.
- Low-Flow Shower Heads + Aerators — Reduces water consumption and energy by requiring less hot water to be generated.
- Smart Power Strips — Stop idle appliances from wasting energy. With a smart power strip, many devices can be consolidated to one outlet and use energy only when the appliance is in use.
- Pipe Insulation — Insulating your hot water pipes reduces heat loss and can raise water temperature 2°F–4°F more than uninsulated pipes. You won’t have to wait as long for hot water when you turn on a faucet or showerhead, which helps conserve water.
